Simpler Recycling is a new set of government regulations introduced by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) in 2023, designed to make recycling clearer and more consistent for businesses. The aim is to end the confusion around what can and can’t be recycled and ensure valuable resources are properly sorted and reused.

By 31st March 2025 all businesses and relevant non-domestic premises in England with 10 or more full-time employees must separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (including cans, tins, and foil) and food waste.

This rule applies regardless of how many employees are on-site at one time. For example, if your business operates across five locations with two full-time employees at each, you are still required to comply.

These changes are part of a national effort to reduce waste, improve recycling rates and support the UK’s circular economy.

Halton BID is working with Veolia, based in Halebank, who are available to visit your premises and offer practical guidance on how to implement the new requirements. As an added benefit, they’ll also offer a BID member discount.
